Coal is the fastest growing energy source in the world especially with rising demand from developing countries as it is one of the cheaper alternative fuel sources, given that the oil and natural gas prices are expected to remain ascending in the near future. The world’s total coal production at the end of 2006 stood at 3079.7 million tonnes, a 5.6% increase over 2005. China and USA were the top 2 coal producing countries in 2006, producing 39% and 19% of the world’s total coal respectively.
